No, but there are different ways to access the joysticks. And the
additional axes and buttons are only supported by the direct input api
and not by the core joystick api. There is already some experimental
code from georg for direct input but it is deactivated atm.

A good start to resume joystick support hacking should be:

util/src/libjoystick/win32joystickdriver.cpp
util/src/libjoystick/directinjoystickdriver.cpp
