Hey everyone! Thought I should introduce myself. I'm Jay aka
digitalhillbilly. I'm a geek livin in one of the last frontier towns
in Canada - Cumberland, BC. I've been playing with computer A/V for
the last 15 years at a few artist run centres in Vancouver doing tech
for live performance art, music and installations. Everything was
based on commercial apps and as time passed restrictions in use as
well as getting tired of being just a user have peaked my interest in
FOSS for the last couple years. I'm not a great programmer but am
learning - being said, I'm happy to help out in whatever small ways I
can.
I'll be providing video projections for an outdoor music festival
here in mid August ( http://www.cumberlandvillageworks.com/
festival/ ) and want to do something a little cooler than just a
bunch of video clips. I found quite a few apps over the last few
weeks and Gephex stands out. Been playing with it now for a couple
weeks on my XP machine and it's the way I want to go. Bought a nice
new C2D to run the show and loaded Ubuntu on it. Ubuntu because I'm
not the only person that will be using it and it's the least geeky of
all linux flavours.
The event has quite a mix of music so I'm building up graphs with
psychedelic ravey imagery, Australian aboriginal art styles,
mandalas, Indian imagry and artwork as well as nature textures and
Canadiana, coal miners and unions and some good 'ol burlesque style
imagery. I have about 12 hours to fill. lol!
I have a number of issues I'm working through and am making progress
but one in particular I'm having trouble with I was hoping someone
could give a bit of advice. In XP using a live video feed via 1394
was no problem - the capture source module found the signal no
problem. However, it's not so in linux. the module is looking at v4l
for the video source but, of course, there is nothing there. I've
been going down a few roads (yuv2mpeg, a frei0r screen capture
plugin, a couple others) and could use a bit of help on which is the
best route.
Thanks!
jt
